The key to getting started with Travel Hacking is setting a 1 or 2 travel goals. Slow and steady wins the race here. Plan ahead as points will take several months to acquire.
Where do you want to travel? International or domestic?
When do you want to travel?
Who are you traveling with?
Are you targeting free flights or free hotel stays?
What are points & miles? Points and miles are issued to you by credit cards, airline & hotels to keep you loyal to their brand.
*Research which airlines fly from the closest major airport to your goal travel destination. Sign up for 2 or 3 of those airline loyalty programs. They are free to participate.
*Research which hotel chain you’d like to stay at. We are big Marriott fans, because they own so many brands and have more than 5700 hotels over 110 countries. Sign up for hotel rewards, again it’s free to participate.
These programs work well if you travel a lot. Otherwise, it takes a long time to generate a free hotel night or a flight, and your points could expire! The combination of signing up for loyalty programs and opening a credit card associated with your loyalty program gets you to your free travel faster. Most airlines and hotels have their own credit cards and often offer great opening bonuses as a jump-start towards your free travel. Plus, every time you travel and pay with your credit card, you will be getting extra points for spending on your card on top of your loyalty rewards.
Credit Card Bonuses are the easiest way to earn points and miles. So sign up for travel credit cards…we’ll dive deeper into our favorite cards and why later in this series.
There are two different types of travel credit cards.
