A store owner from Colorado and his wife set up a 1:1 Coaching Call with Hello Sunny Skies. Travel goal: to attend their niece’s wedding this fall at the Adare Manor in Ireland. They wanted to earn as many points as possible! Their goal was to use points for their flights and to extend their stay in Ireland at a different hotel.
During our call, we went through their upcoming expenses as they would need to hit multiple minimum spends to receive the number of points they desired. They shared in addition to their normal business & personal expenses, they had recently purchased a residential investment property and had set aside money to remodel it. Bingo! The combination of expenses: personal, business and a remodel would add up fast!
As with all 1:1 Coaching Calls, Hello Sunny Skies builds 12 month custom credit card plans. In this case, we recommended 1 Chase flexible travel card (personal): Chase Sapphire Reserve, and 2 Chase Business Cards: Chase Ink Business Preferred and Chase Ink Business Cash. There are workarounds to opening more than one Chase business card and earning 2 sign-on bonuses. We spelled out exactly which card to apply for and when. Included in their custom credit card plan were tips + tricks to using an EIN vs. SSN when opening the business cards. In addition to the business cards, he will open a personal Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Once all points are in his Chase portal, he will combine them to redeem. Note: this does not work with all business cards and does not work with American Express.
Expenses
Personal Credit Card:
We suggested putting all of his personal expenses on his Chase Sapphire Reserve card which he’ll earn 50,000 points after meeting the minimum spend. Expenses like: Consumers Energy, car insurance, homeowners insurance, home security, gym memberships, dry-cleaning, restaurants, groceries, and so many other normal daily expenses.
Business Credit Cards:
The plan was to use the Chase Ink Business Preferred for his store expenses, including inventory and office expenses accruing 80,000 points after he reaches the minimum spend. The second business card, the Chase Ink Business Cash, we suggested buying Lowe’s gift cards from Staples earning him 5x points/$1 spent. Why Lowe’s gift cards? His remodel…he will use the Lowes gift cards he bought from Staples to purchase new appliances, paint, carpet, lights, etc. Chase codes Staples as a supply store earning 5x/$1 vs. the 1x/$1 he would have earned by buying from Lowes with a credit card vs. gift card. But I thought it was a cashback credit card he asked? We find that the most lucrative way to redeem your cashback is by transferring the cashback to your Chase Sapphire Reserve or Ink Business Preferred. By doing this, the cashback transfer option will add 50,000 Ultimate reward points.
Once all minimum spends are met on his personal credit card and Business Ink Preferred, he will refer his wife…also known as double-dipping and start the credit card plan over earning even more points!
