Sabi Sabi, A South African Safari Bucket List Experience

February 6, 2020

Where my desire for travel started…

South Africa, a world away. My husband, Lance won a trip to South Africa through a sales incentive contest. I remember being scared about leaving our children to go halfway around the world. However, from the moment we arrived, I was completely smitten. There is just something about being one with the animals in their surroundings that moves you, spiritually. The safari experience changes you forever. This was the trip that changed my mindset on travel. I knew following this vacation, that I wanted to learn how to earn free travel through travel hacking. I remember thinking, South Africa wasn’t the only place I wanted to visit. I wanted to see the whole world because there is so much out there!

And just like that, I began what would take years of research into travel hacking and free reward travel. Follow our beginner series to see how to travel hack, but in the meantime, I want to share how amazing South Africa is! It’s a bucket list destination for sure and I certainly hope you get to go in this lifetime!

Sabi Sabi, a Private Reserve

First, let’s chat about the Private Reserve Sabi Sabi in South Africa. Sabi Sabi is a private game reserve in South Africa, situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve which flanks the southwestern section of the Kruger National Park. The Sabi Sand Reserve is one of the parks that make up the Greater Kruger National Park. The grounds are known to explore the BIG 5 game animals: the Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Cape Buffalo. However, there are approximately 200 other animal species indigenous to the area. We visited in March and the weather was just perfect, low 60’s in the mornings and evenings and 80 degrees during the day.

The rooms were located in individual abodes, literally in nature! Our Ranger walked us to and from our room and to the main lodge daily, and yes he was armed. Remember, we were in the animal’s natural surroundings, so at any time you can come across wildlife, even on your way to breakfast! And we did, we were regularly greeted by baboons, monkeys, crazy spiders, etc. However, in our room, we felt very protected. I’ve included several photos of Sabi Sabi including our room, main lodge, pool, etc. The resort photos are courtesy of Sabi Sabi.

The Safari Schedule

  • 5:30am Morning Tea (coffee for me) in the main lodge
  • 6:00am Safari Jeep departs before sunrise
  • 9:00am return for breakfast
  • 11:00am safari by foot
  • 1:00pm lunch
  • 4:00pm afternoon tea
  • 4:30 afternoon safari through sunset
  • 7:30pm return to the lodge for cocktail hour
  • 8:00pm dinner

Favorite Animal Sightings

Seeing these amazing animals in their surroundings is truly breathtaking. You feel like one with them. I never felt scared, I just had an enormous amount of adrenaline, the heart-pounding type of excitement!

A couple of highlights for me personally…our very first evening safari hunt, we were surrounded by 7 female lions. They were so close, you could reach your hand out of the jeep and touch them. Obviously, you wouldn’t! We were part of their hunt and they shared the trail with the jeep. The animal in pursuit was the wildebeest and this lion tribe was after the kill. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the actual kill as the wildebeest became spooked. Wait did I just say “unfortunately”, who knew I would have loved the safari life so much?! Did you know that the lion only eats every two weeks? And there really is a Lion King. The female tribe will bring their kill to their master. So fascinating to me!

Next the Cheetahs.  I guess I have a thing for cats.  The way they move, the way they hunt, jump, pounce and climb.

And some more favorites~

Themed Dinners

We enjoyed an African themed dinner outside with African dancers and music.  And yes, I joined in for the dancing…when in Rome- aka, South Africa!

Stargazing

I’ll leave you with this…I have never seen stars so clear and so bright.  They twinkled like millions of Christmas lights and the sky hued a purple cast.  I’ll never forget this trip of a lifetime.  I am so grateful to have experienced it and so excited that it triggered a love for travel I now could never give up.  Hence, Hello Sunny Skies was born and travel hacking began.  Come along with me and learn my tips, tricks, and hacks so you too can travel the world for next to nothing!
