Travel hacking isn’t always just about “free” vacations. You can travel hack a portion of your trip. We do this ourselves when we don’t have quite enough points.
The Goal.
Our client wanted to surprise his wife for her 50th birthday by taking her on vacation—his preference a 4-5 star boutique hotel somewhere in Florida using his Chase Ultimate Reward points and Delta miles.
The Flight.
Flexibility is key! He wanted the dates to fall on her birthday in April but wasn’t committed to specific departure/arrival dates. Bingo! I found flights leaving Denver to Palm Beach on Delta 20,500 points/person +$12 taxes! Her birthday will fall over the last two nights of the trip…box checked.
The Hotel(s).
Next up, a boutique hotel using points. I suggested two different boutique hotels; The Colony Hotel & The White Elephant Palm Beach. He will use his Chase points for five nights at The Colony Hotel in a Junior Suite (value $839/night).
Then, the last two nights (including her birthday), they will stay at the brand new White Elephant Palm Beach, a boutique hotel. If you are a Nantucket lover, this hotel is the sister hotel to The White Elephant on Nantucket! The cost will be $625/night. He will pay with his Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card to earn 3x points per dollar spent.
So for a week’s vacation at 2 luxury hotels in Palm Beach + flights = $1250 +$24 (flight taxes). Pretty sweet deal for a full weeks vacation!
