We all want a complimentary suite upgrade, right? Here is our 3 Step Method to scoring free suites! We used this process for our complimentary suite upgrade on Maui December 2020. 90% of the time, our method works for complimentary upgrades. Of course, suite upgrades are based on hotel availability at the time of check-in. We feel it’s worth a try every time, the worst they can say is no, right?!
This is key! We have Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status, which helps level-up your hotel stays. But even gold and platinum status qualifies you for complimentary room upgrades. Status comes by applying and using Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, yearly-spend, and Marriott hotel stays. We have many tips and tricks to escalating status over a calendar year, but we’ll save that for a future post.
A few days before our stay. I look up which suites are available for the duration of our stay on the Marriott app. I then contact the hotel by email, phone, or chat and let them know how excited we are to be staying with them. This is an excellent time to include why you are traveling, is it for a special occasion? A birthday or an anniversary? Or, let the hotel know that it is your first time traveling to “x” destination. I then directly ask for the specific suite we are interested in. “As a Titanium member, I am hoping for a complimentary upgrade to “x” suite if it’s available during our stay”. At this point, the response is usually to note our account, and if the suite is available, they will do the best they can to upgrade us.
The morning of arrival. I will again check the app to make sure our desired suite is still available. If so, I will reach out again to the hotel to “check back-in” on the availability of a suite upgrade upon arrival. I again explain how excited I am and also share our arrival time.
First, let the hotel agent announce your hotel room. Sometimes, the upgrade is already in the system. Other times, I again remind the agent of our hotel status and the notes assigned to our account requesting an upgrade. As a last resort here, I politely share that I am aware of the available suites on the Marriott app.
A couple more tips and tricks: travel during off-season, upgrades are easier to achieve on shorter stays, don’t book the cheapest room to begin with, check-in later in the day vs. early.
